BANGKOK, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- People Power Party (PPP) leader Samak Sundaravej, who is facing jail sentence for alleged defamation and corruption, was today elected as Thailand's 25th prime minister.

The Thai parliament voted to pick the 72-year-old Samak as the new prime minister after he obtained 310 votes against 163 secured by Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, 43.

Under the roll-call voting system, each member of parliament is asked to name his or her candidate.

Samak, a veteran politician handpicked by Thaksin to lead PPP after his Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party was dissolved last year by the court and its 111 party executives banned from politics for five years, will take over from former army chief Surayud Chulanont.

Macam-macam..
Samak jadi PM kerana menang undi.
