Abu Dhabi Licence Plate No.1 Fetches Record 52.2 Mln Dirham

DUBAI, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- Businessman Saeed Al Khouri is now the proud owner of the world's most expensive licence plate after paying a whopping 52.2 million dirham (about RM45.8 million @ USD14.2 millions) for plate No.1 at an auction in Abu Dhabi Saturday.

Al Khouri, 25, of Abu Dhabi, won the coveted plate number after what the Gulf News daily described as a furious contest in the final stages of the auction conducted at the Emirates Palace hotel.

He broke the record by paying more than double the previous record which went to plate No.5 that was sold for 25.2 million dirham to his cousin, Talal Ali Mohammad Khouri, also a prominent businessman.

Within minutes after the bidding began, the price of the plate shot up to 26 million dirham from the opening one million dirham. Al Khouri told Gulf News that he was determined to purchase the plate at any cost and that he had no intention to sell it.

Abdullah Matar Al Mannaei, managing director of Emirates Auction, the official auctioneer for Code 5 distinguished number plate auctions, said the auction -- the sixth organised by Emirates Auction -- attracted 750 bids and generated a record 89 million dirham from the sale of 90 number plates.

When the bidding for No.1 surpassed 47 million dirham, the competition was limited to two people -- Al Khouri and Yousuf Naser, a Dubai businessman -- Gulf News said. Ultimately, Al Khouri triumphed with a bid of 52.2million dirham. Khouri conceded to AFP that he would have been willing to pay up to 100 million dirhams (27.4 million dollars) to get his hands on the number "1".

The money generated will be used to establish a specialised hospital in Abu Dhabi for accident victims.

nak gelak sama gak.. hak hak hak
